NDSU Parent Resource Centers
The evidence-based Circle of Security program focuses on how adult/child relationships can be strengthened by teaching caregivers new ways to understand the needs of young children. Circle of Security is designed to help caregivers increase their awareness of children’s needs and meet those needs, not just focusing on the behaviors of the child. Caregivers learn about the Circle of Security graphic and use that as a guide in determining how they interact and interpret needs of young children to better meet these critical needs. Caregivers reflect on their response to the needs of the young child and explore how an adult’s response to a child’s cues of a need affect the adult/child relationship positively or negatively. Caregivers learn to “be with” the child to become a safe base from which the child can explore but also a safe haven to be welcomed back. The Circle of Security is based on application of attachment theory.
